Block-In

Two hours, 12"x16". My landscape painting essentials instructor Robert Watts wanted us to focus on breaking down scenery into simple abstract shapes, using straight lines as much as possible to lay down average lines upon which we can build more complex structures later. We stuck primarily to a monochromatic, two-value system for this exercise.

It's funny how art goes in cycles from more realistic appearances (High Renaissance, Neo Classicism) to more abstract (Impressionism, Cubism) and even mixes of both like Matisse's paintings. But they always bounce back and forth with each other. It's cool that they are challenging you with these restrictions. It allows you to see your work in many different ways. I bet when Picasso and Braque first started their Cubist paintings it was very hard for them to think so differently.
