Three-and-a-half hours. I've been using sables for so long, I forgot how awesome bristle brushes were.

Twos, fives, and twenty-fives. Haven't done quick sketch in what seems like forever and boy it shows. Been drawing lately on rough paper because I enjoy seeing the texture in my sketches. That or I've been hanging around my Art Center buddies too much. Probably both.

Four hours. 8x10. I normally paint on those crappy acrylic-primed canvas panels you find at any given art store, but tonight I decided to splurge a little and do a portrait on a slightly nicer surface - wood with gesso on top. I figure my drawing and painting have reached a point where I can somewhat justify using more lavish materials every now and then.

Worked a little smaller than I normally do, just so I could get more done with the time allotted to us.

Twenty-five minutes for the first two sketches, fifty minutes for the second. I decided to start drawing in ink in a tiny Moleskine for a while to keep things fresh and to get more sketches in with the time I have at workshops. I've also been inspired lately with the pen-and-ink drawings of Charles Dana Gibson and wanted to try something in his style. In addition, I also realized that pretty much all my favorite fantasy illustrators do amazing ink renderings, and since I'd like to try to break into that field someday, I figure I might as well get good at it too.

Ink is really frightening since you're walking a tightrope without a net - make one false move and your drawing is trash. But for some reason, that's exactly why I like it - knowing it's permanent frees me from noodling too much and forces me to make big decisions.

Three hours. Ignat's portrait painting class is really fun. We often paint with gels over the spotlights to mix things up a bit.
