I switched to using Venetian Red instead of Alizarin Crimson on this one just to try something new and ended up being really surprised with the color harmony. I shouldn't be too shocked though - this is the same red Aaron Coberly uses in his terrific limited palette paintings. This one took only three hours - getting faster!

Three hours (two in front of the model, one at home). I had a tough time hitting Amy's likeness today. I don't like to make excuses for bad drawings, but it's a bit of a challenge to see nuances when you're fifteen plus feet away.

Five hours. This one suddenly went south about two hours in, and I had to quickly figure out how to salvage it before time ran out. In the process of fixing it though, I learned how important it is to recover and retain the drawing underneath as you progress - you can't let things get too mushy.

Getting pretty comfortable with this modified Zorn palette. I'll probably switch the red from alizarin crimson to venetian red next time around just to get used to new color mixes.

Drawing Heads Out of Your Head #1

Well, Zhanglu's tutorial video finally came out and it was well worth the wait. Jason Manley did a thirty minute voice-over lecture and suggested that for practice that we draw heads out of our imagination, so... here's one. It's not completely out of my noggin' - I was looking at Zhanglu's own drawings for ideas on mark-making - but a good 90% of it is. I'm kind of surprised how much information I've retained over the years. I guess all that life drawing is good for something after all!
